My New Shelfari Bookshelf

Hi, guys and gals,

While I await the publication of my debut novel, A Chance to Say Yes, I am adding books to my new Shelfari book shelf, which is posted on my new blog at http://tinamurray.blogspot.com/. When you visit, you see that I have posted my bookshelf to that blog. In order to view the books on my shelves, please click the "Next" button at the bottom of the bookcase to see all the books I've added so far.

Right now, all the books on my shelf were written by women, women who are either publsihed by my publisher, ArcheBooks Publishing, Inc. (http://www.archebooks.com/), or who are members of the Southwest Florida Romance Writers (http://www.swfrw.org/), an affiliate of the Romaonce Writers of America (ww.rwanational.org), both organizations I recently joined.. I wanted to place my friend Phyllis Smallman's new mystery novel, Margartia Nights, on the shelf, but right now it is only available through http://www.amazon.ca/, and is not available in the US.

After viewing all 15 book jackets, you may simply click on each invidual book to read more about that book. Contrary to what Shelfari says, I have NOT READ all these books. I hope to read them all. However, I still don't know how to operate the Shelfari website well enough to list books correctly as "I've read" or "I'm reading" or "I plan to read." Frankly, I felt fortunate just to get the books posted to the shelves. A computer whiz, I'm not! I do struggle along, however, doing the best I can.

SIX RANDOM THINGS ABOUT ME

1. I am waiting eagerly for the release of A Chance to Say Yes, my debut novel. My ArcheBooks publisher told me it would be released sometime during the second half of May, 2008. I have begun to write the first of the sequels.

2. I recently watched the DVD Night at the Museum with Ben Stiller and laughed myself silly. I nearly choked on my Cheetos.

3. I love to write. Generally, I plunge in and don't come out until I MUST. "Writer's block" seems to me a weird concept. It's like -- huh?

4. My favorite color is blue. As a child, my favorite crayon in the Crayola box was Midnight Blue. However, I also love powder, baby, and cornflower blue (blues?). In fact, I never met a blue a didn't like. The sky is a gift from The Creator.

5. I do not have an agent. I am open to suggestions.

6. I recently had my hair cut and colored, and I've had more compliments on this hair-do than on any other "do" I've ever had in my whole life. These compliments have come from both males and females, youngsters and mature folks. I'm in shock over it all.

The Writer's Life

So you want to be a writer? Here's a quote from my young friend, 17-year-old aspiring writer Hannah Misciasci: "You can tell I'm a writer. I'm a pale, scatterbrained recluse."

Why scatterbrained? "Because my mind is always on something else."

Ah, yes! The story...

Of course, these days, conventional wisdowm holds that a writer can't be just a recluse anymore. One must also be a promoter and sales person. Nevertheless, I love Hannah's observation.

In regards to a release date for A Chance to Say Yes, I'm waiting to hear from my publisher. You'll be the first to know when I do. Right now, my sequel is pouring forth. I've had to put out pots and pans to catch the flow. Don't want to miss any of those raindrops from on high. I'm very excited about A Wild Dream of Love.

Ready, Set...

Hi, there!

At last, we're getting close to publication. I sent the galleys back to my publisher. So, it's only a matter of weeks before my debut novel, A Chance to Say Yes, is released. I'll let you know the release date as soon as Publisher Bob tells me.

On a personal level, I had a rough time last year, a time of ordeal and setbacks. I'm so glad that the novel made it through, in spite of all my personal trauma. Life's not all perfect yet, but I'm surviving, so far. Thanks, Reader, for hanging in with me through it all. I believe you'll enjoy the payoff: a good read in A Chance to Say Yes.

On a fun note, I've been invited by romance writer Lynnette Halberg (http://www.swfrw.org/halberg_lynette.html) to attend an upcoming meeting of the Southwest Florida Romance Writers (www.swfrw.org). I am excited about attending, which I will do this Saturday, along with my associate from the Gulfcoast Writers (www.gulfcoastwriters.net), Karen Dean Benson. who is working on a historical romance novel. First, we'll attend the luncheon at Bennigans in The Promenade at Bonita Springs, and then move on to the regular meeting place at Robb and Stucky.

The interesting thing is: Lynnette heard about me through someone to whom I had given my business card. That means my networking is working. Yay!

Speaking of the Gulfcoast Writers (http://www.gulfcoastwriters.net/), I attended their monthly meeting last weekend in at the Lutheran Church in Fort Myers, where the speaker was accomplished theatre-educator and playwright Louise Wigglesworth. In addition to sharing valuable information about the writing of plays and scripts, she. also, led interesting excecises in which members read aloud from plays. Louise teaches classes at the Sugden Theatre in Naples. I don't have a web address for her, unfortunately.

Meanwhile, I'm focusing in on the first sequel to A Chance to Say Yes. The sequel will be called A Wild Dream of Love. I'm very excited about working on it! I wish I could devote every waking minute to the process. Soon, soon, I hope...

Countdown to Book Launch

Hey, everybody!

I have good news. Editor Vickie DuBois and I are in the final throes of editing my debut novel, A Chance to Say Yes. My book will be unleashed on the public in just a few weeks. I am excited about the release of my first novel, but I'm really excited about my story. I hope you love the story as much as I do. I'm mad for my characters. I've even found myself window shopping for clothes for my characters. I know who looks good in what. I'm over the edge, but it's oddly fun.

The sequel to A Chance to Say Yes, which is tentatively entitled A Wild Dream of Love, is burning a hole in my head, even as I work feverishly to put A Chance to Say Yes on the book shelves of your local stores. As I mentioned, A Chance to Say Yes will be available for purchase sometime in March. You will be able to buy it online through www.amazon.com, as well as through www.barnesandnoble.com and other fine booksellers, whom I'll mention as plans are finalized. REALLY Starting Over Nearlly 4 Months Later

Is anyone out there? It's been so long since last I blogged that I'm afraid I've been forgotten. Well, starting now, I'm going to do all I can to change that situation. Slowly, my life seems to be tracking back on course, thanks to help from Above. Right now, in case you are interested, I am in the process of editing my book, A Chance to Say Yes. Editor Vickie is waiting patiently for me to complete my revisions.

Starting Over

I'm updating this blog just so you will know I'm still here. The past two and a half months have been extremely rocky for me. Things can get better, and I continue to hope and pray. All things are possible to those who know and love the Lord. I'm up on the horse now and trying to stay in the saddle. I'm happy to say that my novel, A Chance to Say Yes, is in the editing process. Serene Gulf of Mexico

Finally! A moment to think ... A walk along the shore of the serene Gulf of Mexico is a relaxing diversion from my busy schedule. Here in Naples, Florida, the Gulf can sometimes resemble a placid lake. I love a stormy sea (within reason), but today I need calmness.

This weekend I attended, for the first time, a meeting of the Southwest Florida Romance Writers (www.swfrw.org). The meeting was held at the lovely Grandezza clubhouse in Estero, Florida. I heard informative and enligtening talks by author Hallie Ephron and literary agent Christina Hogrebe of The Jane Rotrosen Agency in New York. I enjoyed the meeting, met friendly, interesting people, and hope to join the group soon as an official member.

Last weekend, I attended the monthly meeting of the Southwest Florida Chapter of the Florida Writers' Association (www.floridawriters.net). We met at Leapin' Lizards in Cape Coral and had a good crowd. Several of us read pieces aloud. Please feel free to join us for the next get-together, which will be held somewhere in Naples. A new site has not been selected yet. We were holding our Naples meetings at one of the Silver Spoon restaurants, but the restaurant closed.

Naples City Pier

Not long ago, I took a stroll on the Naples City Pier. I spent my sojourn on the pier alone with my thoughts. So much has happened to me lately that I feel the need for solitude, even when in a crowd.

The pier was first built in 1888, according to the historical marker near its entrance. Over the years, hurricanes took their toll, but repair or rebuilding always ensued. Today we have a sturdy, welcoming structure, a landmark (watermark?) of Southwest Florida.

Although I did not use a digital camera, I do have this one snapshot to share with you. It proved to be the only strong image of the lot. Here sits a self-confident pelican, obviously right at home, who really gave me the eyeball when I snapped his portrait. Typically, on the pier, you see humans as well as birds -- locals and tourists meandering the wooden pier, or fishing, or standing idly by, enjoying the warm Gulf breeze and bright sunshine. In the background, grand beach homes line the foliage-lush coastline of Naples proper. Have you ever walked the planks of this venerable pier?

Southwest Florida Waterways

Here is a shot I took of a water way in North Naples. If you look closely you can six little birds sitting on one of the power lines. Southwest Florida is a boating haven, a lovely place for cruising and sight-seeing. A sailing yacht is featured in my forthcoming romance novel, A Chance to Say Yes, which is set in beautiful Naples, Florida.

Professional Novelists' Workshop

What a busy weekend! On January 13-14, I attended the Professional Novelists’ Workshop hosted by my publisher, Bob Gelinas of ArcheBooks Publishing, Inc. (www.archebooks.com). Held at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Cape Coral, Florida, the event was attended by both aspiring and established authors. Over the course of two days, I was able to reconnect with old friends and make new ones.

Some of the attendees included authors Prudy Taylor Board, Dr. Molly, Hawk MacKinney, Robert Dean Bair, and Penny Lauer, all ArcheBooks authors. Psychologist Liz Laquidara was also on hand to liven up the discussions. I met other nice folks, too, whose complete names I didn’t get and, therefore, can’t give here. I did get the pen name of one, Summer Breeze, a charming gal with blonde bangs and a sun chapeau. During the breaks, I hung out with my author-friends Sandy Lender (www.todaythedragonwins.blogspot.com) and M. B. Weston (www.elysianchronicles.com), both of whom have fantasy novels which are about to be released by ArcheBooks.

During his talks, Publisher Bob shared lots of useful and hard-to-come-by info about the business of writing and publishing. He gave us numerous suggestions and tips for advancing our careers as professional novelists. I plan to use them to help promote my forthcoming romance novel, A Chance to Say Yes. Thanks, Bob!

A New Year Blooms

Sometimes one stumbles upon a marvel of nature, such as this yellow hibiscus blossom, a glorious sunburst in miniature. Such chance discoveries abound in the warm winter climate of lush Southwest Florida. They can channel our spirits towards hope.

Naples-on-the-Gulf

Voila! Here is a photograph I took of the beautiful Gulf of Mexico in November, 2006. I was standing on sandy Vanderbilt Beach in Naples, Florida, and facing northward towards Bonita Beach. A winter resort, the city of Naples is located in Southwest Florida. Traditionally, it has been a haven for wealthy winter visitors, but it has grown rapidly in recent years and now boasts many year-rounders. Lovely Naples is the setting I chose for my soon-to-be-published romance novel, A Chance to Say Yes. In upcoming posts, I will share more pictures of this charming locale.

Cold-Weather Musings

Becoming a writer has changed my whole approach to existence. Perceptions which once escaped into the ether now loom momentously as raw material to be honed and crafted. Today is my birthday. The previous two years have been the most difficult years of my life. My only solace is that my experiences are no longer in vain. As a writer, I am able to fashion communicable truth from the ruins, or, at least, to strive to do so.

Florida Writers Association Conference at Disney

A whirlwind this week! I just returned from the annual conference of the Florida Writers Association in vibrant Orlando, Florida. This year’s event, held at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, was a big hit with members, now 800 strong. On Saturday, I attended informative presentations by authors Dan Poynter (Self Publishing Manual; Skydivers Handbook; http://ParaPublishing.com), M.B. Weston (A Prophecy Forgotten, available from ArcheBooks Publishing, http://www.archebooks.com/), and Patricia Camburn Behnke (Tortoise Stew). I only wish I’d had time to attend others, too. Also, I met and chatted with a number of aspiring writers, including TMMercury, horror-writer Dan Strohschein, and smiling Sandy, whose last name I missed. I really enjoyed meeting everyone and gathering useful information about the art, craft, and business of writing.
